E-PORTFOLIO

Digital portfolios, particularly electronic portfolios (e-portfolios), have emerged as a fundamental tool in primary education, providing innovative ways to assess and enhance learning among young children. Their use is characterized by a variety of benefits that support not only academic progress but also the emotional and social development of students.

One central advantage of e-portfolios is their ability to offer a more organized and accessible platform for tracking student progress. According to Prihandoko et al. (2020), e-portfolios allow teachers, parents, and students to access and monitor educational documents conveniently. This organized approach can become particularly beneficial in primary schools, where standardized portfolio assessments can revolutionize document storage and access compared to traditional methods. Moreover, the digital nature of e-portfolios aids in improving students' autonomy, as it grants them the opportunity to actively engage with their learning processes and take ownership of their educational journeys (Nourdad & Banagozar, 2022).

Our research indicates that e-portfolios contribute significantly to the metacognitive and reflective skills of young students. Bedel et al. (2024) highlight that these digital tools also promote multifaceted reflection on children’s experiences, enhancing their emotional engagement and reinforcing their learning processes. Furthermore, Meyer et al. (2010) assert that the use of e-portfolios leads to improvements in literacy and self-regulated learning (SRL), indicating a strong link between e-portfolio use and enhanced academic achievement in fundamental skills essential at the primary level. E-portfolios also serve as a bridge between educational stakeholders, including parents and educators. Mcleod and Vasinda (2008) conclude that e-portfolios encourage parental participation in their children's learning, enhancing communication and collaboration among teachers, students, and families.

The sharing of digital portfolios with parents fosters a community-centric approach to education, linking children's learning experiences outside the classroom with their formal education. While the integration of e-portfolios at the primary level appears promising, certain challenges remain.

Limited digital literacy among students can inhibit the effective use of these tools, requiring educators to provide adequate support and training (Modise, 2021). However, the versatility of e-portfolios allows for adaptability in their application, encouraging ongoing engagement and the development of digital skills crucial for 21st-century learning environments (Modise & Mudau, 2021).

In summary, e-portfolios represent an effective strategy for enhancing the educational experiences of primary school children. Their capability to organize learning materials, foster reflection and metacognition, and improve communication between teachers and parents highlights their integral role in modern educational methodologies. As research continues to explore their potential, e-portfolios seemingly offer a valuable avenue for improving both educational outcomes and the overall learning environment for young students.
