JUSTIFICATION

Justification

This learning situation is designed according to the Order of May 30, 2023, which develops the curriculum for the Primary Education stage in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.

We will explain the main characteristics of living beings, and the groups in which they can be classified, always putting the emphasis on plants. The learning situation described is aimed at students coursing the fourth grade, which is part of the second cycle of primary school, they will be between the ages of 9 and 10 years old. The learning situation will take a total of 11,5 hours of lessons, divided in two weeks, since there is a minimum of two hours and thirty minutes of science class a week. The learning situation  will take part in a total of eight classes and a last one dedicated to an exam. The contents of the subjects are the following ones: types of living beings, characteristics of plants, nutrition of plants, relations between plants, plant reproduction, classification of plants. The learning situation covers various areas of knowledge, including biology, ecology, and environmental science.

The area of Knowledge of the Natural, Social, and Cultural Environment aims for students to develop responsible and respectful attitudes towards nature, fostering democratic and ethical values through the exploration of plant life and its essential role on our planet. The objective is for students to understand the interconnection between human actions and the well-being of the green world, promoting a more sustainable, fair, and caring approach to the environment. Studying plants and their ecosystems is crucial for helping students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become critical and environmentally conscious citizens. This involves the safe and thoughtful use of information sources, as well as education for sustainable development and global citizenship. Scientific thinking is promoted throughout the learning situation, enabling students to make informed decisions in personal, social, and academic contexts. The subjects addressed in this learning situation include: the classification of living beings with a focus on plants, the structure and life cycle of plants, seasonal changes in nature, the impact of human activity on vegetation, and the importance of preserving biodiversity to maintain the balance of our ecosystems.

Throughout this learning situation, various key competencies will be developed. These include digital competence, personal and social competence, which enables individuals to manage emotions and build positive relationships; the learning-to-learn competence, essential for fostering autonomy in the learning process; citizenship competence, which promotes active and responsible participation in society; entrepreneurial competence, encouraging creativity, initiative, and the ability to face challenges; and finally, linguistic communication competence, which is crucial for effectively expressing oneself in different contexts.
